Manufacturing SEO breaks most of the rules other verticals follow. The keywords have derisory search volumes — forty searches a month, sometimes twelve. The sales cycle runs six to eighteen months. Traffic is a nearly useless metric. And yet it is one of the highest-return applications of SEO there is, because a single term with thirty monthly searches can carry a contract worth six figures. The mistake most manufacturers make is applying consumer SEO logic to a market where it does not hold.
Volume Is the Wrong Metric
“CNC machining” has meaningful search volume and almost no commercial value to you — it is students, hobbyists and researchers.
“Swiss screw machining for medical device components” has perhaps twenty searches a month, and every one of them is a design engineer specifying a supplier.
Judge keywords by who is searching, not how many. The four-dimensional assessment in our guide to keyword analysis applies here more than anywhere: business value should carry far more weight than volume.
A practical test: for each keyword, ask what the searcher is doing. If the honest answer is “writing a school assignment,” skip it regardless of volume. If it is “specifying a supplier for a production run,” pursue it regardless of how small the number looks.
Capability Pages With Real Numbers
The core of manufacturing SEO is one substantial page per process, and the differentiator is specificity.
Each capability page needs:
- Processes and equipment, with actual machine makes, models and counts
- Materials worked, named specifically
- Tolerances achievable, with real figures
- Part size envelope — maximum and minimum dimensions
- Volume range — prototype, low volume, production
- Lead times
- Industries served
“Precision machining to tight tolerances” is invisible to search and meaningless to an engineer. “±0.0005 in on turned parts up to 12 in diameter in 316 stainless” ranks for specific queries and tells a buyer whether to continue reading.
Publish the equipment list. Engineers genuinely read these, and it captures searches for specific machine capabilities.
The Long Tail Is the Whole Game
Manufacturing search is overwhelmingly long-tail and specific:
- “[material] machining for [industry]”
- “[process] for [part type]”
- “ISO 13485 contract manufacturer [region]”
- “[tolerance spec] machining supplier”
- “aluminium extrusion for heat sinks”
Each may have twenty searches a month. Two hundred such pages, each capturing a handful of highly qualified visitors, is a substantial pipeline in a market where one enquiry can be transformative.
This is also why generic content marketing advice fails here. Nobody in manufacturing needs “10 tips for choosing a supplier.” They need to know whether you can hold the tolerance.
Technical Content That Engineers Search
Content that brings qualified technical buyers:
Material comparisons — “6061 vs 7075 aluminium,” “PEEK vs Delrin for [application],” “304 vs 316 stainless for marine use.”
Process selection — “when to use injection moulding vs CNC machining,” “casting vs forging for [part type].”
Design for manufacturability — draft angles, wall thickness, tolerance stack-up, undercuts. Engineers search these during design, which is precisely when supplier decisions get made.
Cost drivers — what actually makes a part expensive to machine, how quantity affects unit price, when a design change saves significant money.
Standards and certification explainers — what AS9100 requires, what ITAR registration means for a supplier.
Write these properly or not at all. Technical audiences detect superficial content immediately, and one wrong figure destroys credibility permanently. This is content that should be written or reviewed by an engineer, which makes it expensive and is exactly why competitors have not done it.
The PDF Problem
Manufacturing sites lean heavily on PDFs — spec sheets, material data, capability statements. PDFs index poorly, cannot carry structured data, are bad on mobile, and force a download before evaluation.
Publish the substance as HTML and offer the PDF alongside. A material specification as a web page with a proper table ranks; the same content as a PDF largely does not.
CAD file downloads behind a form are fine and expected — engineers accept it and the lead quality is high. Gate the file, publish the data.
Measuring It Properly
Traffic and rankings are poor success metrics here. What to track instead:
- RFQ submissions and their quality
- Which pages RFQ submitters visited before converting
- Assisted conversions — the material comparison article read four months before the quote request
- Pipeline value attributable to organic, not session counts
A manufacturing site getting 800 organic sessions a month and three qualified RFQs is performing well. One getting 20,000 sessions from students is not. Reporting that leads with traffic volume will make the first look like failure.
Attribution is genuinely hard with an eighteen-month cycle. Accept directional evidence rather than demanding precision.
Technical Foundations
Manufacturing sites are frequently old and slow. Two issues matter most:

Skilled labour shortages are the binding constraint for many manufacturers, and careers pages are often among the most-visited on these sites. Searches like “CNC machinist jobs [city]” carry real volume and the page costs nothing extra to do well. Treat recruitment as a legitimate SEO objective rather than an afterthought.
Publish the Specifications
The single most useful change most manufacturing websites could make is replacing marketing language with numbers.
Every vague claim is a missing data point that pushes an engineer toward a competitor who published the figure. Publishing tolerances, equipment lists, materials, size envelopes and certifications feels like giving information away. It is actually the qualification process running itself — which is exactly what a B2B website should do while your sales team sleeps.
Do that, add genuine technical content that engineers search during design, and measure it on RFQs rather than sessions. The volumes will look small and the pipeline will not.
